WCHS Pep Flag Members: Chelsea Vielhauer, Monica Paz, Janel Joy Malabad,
Theresa Dao, Valerie Munoz, and Stephanie Gonzalez

Interview with Janel Joy Malabad

What did you think of the last minute photoshoot scene after knowing that Theresa wasn't in uniform?
I thought it was funny to focus on Theresa not being in uniform because she normally follows instructions.

Do you think the composite fit well with the situation?
Yes! The composite fit well with the situation because it showed our own personalities.

How do you feel about everyone's facial expression?
I feel that our facial expressions showed our personalities individually.

What was difficult for you about the photoshoot?
Having to choose what face to use was difficult for me.

Photoshoot with Mina, Jason, & Nijah

Photoshoot with Mina Beleno, Jason Gugol, and Nijah Kingston Gugol

Interview with Mina Beleno

Did you find the location of the photoshoot to your liking?
I had no problem with the location. I liked it because it was a different scene.

Did you have any concerns with Nijah in the alley?
I had no concerns with Nijah being in the alley because he didn't really get into anything or touch anything there.

What was most difficult about this photoshoot?
The most difficult thing about this photoshoot was trying to get Nijah to smile and stay still at the same time.

WCHS Pep Flags Photoshoot

WCHS Pep Flag Members: Chelsea Vielhauer, Monica Paz,
Theresa Dao, Stephanie Gonzalez, Valerie Munoz, and Janel Joy Malabad

Interview with Theresa Dao

Did you like the concept of the non-traditional portrait?
Yes, I did like the funny face portraits because we were able to really express who we are individually.

Did you mind that the photoshoot was right after your performance at the Renaissance Rally?
I didn't really mind not fixing our make-up or hair because, honestly, I didn't really notice or remember.

What was the most fun about this photoshoot?
The photoshoot was fun because it wasn't too professional or formal. It was very relaxed and we were able to goof around and have fun.

Photoshoot with Caitlin

What kind of character were you assuming the role of during the photoshoot?
During the photo shoot I wanted to pay tribute to the femme fatales of classic hardboiled pulp magazines. Women who had their own agendas and didn't care what it took to get what they wanted or what anyone thought of them (plus just a hint of the reckless troublemaker attitude of Wanda Woodward from Cry-Baby). Of course, the polished glamor of the character's surface while simmering just below lies the personality of someone who's not afraid of danger or getting their hands dirty, just added to the appeal.

What was difficult about the photoshoot?
The heels! Heels are always the most difficult part of shoots like this. That, and hoping the shoot wouldn't get rained out. I'm sure we could have improvised another location if we had to, but I'm really glad we were able to use the downtown exteriors with the wet pavement 1. I just love details like that.

After your suggestion of adding text to the photograph to make it more of a vintage pulp magazine cover, do you think the editing I did was successful?
I'd say your edit was more than successful! You were so accommodating to my absurdly particular suggestions, but you still brought your own visual style to the image and really tied the whole concept together. My favorite kind of post-production is when the edits not only make the image more aesthetically appealing, but also adds another layer to the story that the picture is telling. And you truly made that happen!

1 "It rains every night Film Noir; filmmakers admit that this is entirely because at night wet pavement looks cooler than dry."

The hair and makeup artist for this shoot was Lucy Mendoza.

Here is the original photograph without the text.

What is your costume of?
My costume is of Marilyn Monroe.

Why were you dressed like Marilyn Monroe?
I was dressed as Marilyn Monroe for my high school homecoming skit. I had to come up with a skit because I was on homecoming court.

What was most difficult about the photoshoot?
The most difficult thing about the photoshoot for me was trying to be seductive like Marilyn, because I am not a very eductive person.

I decided to change the photograph to black and white to get a better feel of the Marilyn Monroe character, instead of color. How do you feel about my editing decisions?
I love your editing decisions, because it made the picture more appealing to the eye. I feel like a model, but only because of your editing skills.

Do you usually wear red lipstick?
No, I usually don't wear red lipstick. The reason I wore it on Friday, October 12th, was because I had to dress up as a greaser for a skit at school.

What was difficult about this photoshoot?
What was difficult about the photoshoot was doing the poses because I felt like I wasn't posing right.

Were you comfortable during the photoshoot?
Yes, I was comfortable with the shoot because I had been asked to do a photoshoot before.

Photoshoot with Chelsea Vielhauer

Chelsea Vielhauer

Your mom (Lucy Manalo) and I were trying to find an epic place to photograph you. Were you disappointed with the location?
No. The utilization of the gazebo and candles still gave it a wonderful look.

My ultimate vision was to put graffiti on the brick walls post-photoshoot. However, I decided to just add your name with drip letters. How do you feel about my editing decision?
I really like it, especially since it's my favorite color.

What was difficult about this photoshoot?
I thought it was kind of hard to keep the dogs away. I wanted to help move them, but if I moved the candles would set fire to the dress.

Here is a behind the scenes shot of the photoshoot.
